The Master of Oviedo
SS. Simon and Jude

The Holy Chamber, Oviedo Cathedral, Spain
These figures were identified as Simon and Jude by the audio guide provided by the cathedral. The Golden Legend says they were slain together by pagan magicians. Below their feet are harpies, creatures with the bodies of birds and human faces. Fanciful creatures are common in Romanesque columns and may be without any specific significance in this case.
The same chamber contains similar sculptures of the other apostles.
